Guide to Lakefront Vacation Homes

If you are coming to Deep Creek in late spring, summer or early fall, a lakefront vacation home is a perfect getaway! There are some important things to consider when choosing a lakefront home.

Different Type of Lakefront Vacation Homes

Stairs or Flat?

Some lakefront homes in Deep Creek are situated on an elevated hill with stairs that walk down to a dock with no real yard. Other homes have flat, grassy lakefront. If you are traveling with grandparents or anyone with physical limitations, stairs to the lake could be a real issue. If it isn’t clear in the description of the home, take a good look at the pictures to see if it shows the lake access area. If you can’t find the information and stairs would be problem, reach out to the rental company or owner to ask about the lake access.

Dock Slips

Many lakefront homes come with dock slips that the renter can use. This is particularly convenient if you plan to rent a boat for the week. You can park the boat right at your house and have the convenience of being able to come and go by boat as you please! Some lakefront homes have private docks and others have shared docks. A shared dock has at least two boat slips and could be shared between your house and the house next door, or it could be a community dock with multiple boat slips.

Keep in mind when looking at pictures of possible rental homes, that some pictures might be taken in the winter, with really expansive lake views. If there are trees in the back of the house, in the summer, those views may be filtered when the leaves are on the trees.

Which Part of Deep Creek Lake is Best to Stay In?

There is not an easy answer to the question of which part of the lake is best to stay. It really depends on what you are looking for in your vacation.

McHenry: Northern Deep Creek Lake

McHenry is located in the northern part of the lake. Wisp Ski Resort is located in McHenry as well as several shops, restaurants, a grocery store, the fairgrounds, and most of the marinas. All of the family fun centers that Deep Creek offers (mini-golf, Go-Karts, arcades, etc) are also located in McHenry. There is a lot to do in McHenry!

If you are looking for ski-in ski out houses, this is where you will find them! If you want a mountain top home with lake views, McHenry is your spot! McHenry Cove is at the very top of Deep Creek Lake, and home to four of Deep Creek’s marinas. It is also where the fireworks are set off on the 4th of July, so if you are coming that week, a house in McHenry Cove would be wonderful!

Things to consider for McHenry:

There is a lot to do-it’s where a lot of the Deep Creek action is
Close to Wisp Resort
There are no lakefront restaurants in McHenry
With all of the marinas and condos, McHenry Cove has a lot of boat traffic, therefore it isn’t ideal for swimming.
Some lakefront homes can be located on busy streets like Marsh Hill Road or Deep Creek Drive.
This is where you will find some lakefront properties with a lot of stairs

Oakland: Central Deep Creek Lake

Oakland is located in the middle of Deep Creek Lake. Oakland is the only part of the lake with lakefront restaurants–there are five of them, all with transient docks! Some of Deep Creek’s best restaurants are located in this middle part of the lake, including Firewater Kitchen & Bar, Dutch’s at Silver Tree, Brenda’s Pizzeria, Ace’s Run, Uno’s and Pawn Run. Oakland is also the location of Arrowhead Market, a small grocery store with a delicious deli inside. Also located in Oakland, is Deep Creek’s famous Honi-Honi Bar, a lakefront bar which features live bands on an outdoor stage throughout the day in the summer, as well as corn hole, a playground a lots of transient boat docks.

Things to consider for Oakland:

The location for all lakefront restaurants
Near Honi-Honi Bar, movie theater and shops
Still only a short drive to Wisp Resort (less than 10 minutes)
Some lakefront homes can be located right on the busy main channel of the lake, which isn’t ideal for swimming.

Swanton: Southern Deep Creek Lake

Swanton is located in the southern end of Deep Creek Lake. This is the quietest part of the lake, with the least amount of boat traffic. The southern end of the lake is our favorite part of the lake for swimming and water sports. There is a much more chill vibe in this part of the lake. This is a great location for anyone wanting escape from the hustle bustle.

Things to consider for Swanton:

Quiet part of the lake, ideal for swimming and serene lake houses.
No restaurants or shops but only a short drive to Oakland.
A further drive to Wisp Ski Resort, depending on where in Swanton, could take 20 minutes to get to Wisp.
