Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle, is one of the most beautiful Hawaiian islands, with lush landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and some of the best beaches in the world. But with six distinct regions, it can feel overwhelming deciding where to stay. Should you choose the sunny South Shore, the lush North Shore, or the more central East Side?

This guide breaks down the best areas to stay in Kauai—what each region is like, who it’s best for, and the top-rated hotels and vacation rentals—so you can find the perfect home base for your island getaway.

The 5 Regions of Kauai

This fabulous map, created by Shaka Guide, is a great visual of the layout of Kauai.  There are 5 main regions of Kauai:  The North Shore, Na Pali Coast (Northwest), Southwest Side, South Shore, and East Side.

The cliffs of the Na Pali Coast take up the entire northwest region of Kauai.  This region is uninhabitable-so there are no homes or hotels, and there are also no roads, making it impossible to drive completely around the island. If you are Kekaha or Waimea and want to drive to Hanalei, you have to drive all the way around the east side of the island, which will take you over 2 hours.

In order to cut back on driving times, I recommend that you stay part of your trip in the South Shore and part of your trip in the North Shore.   This will give you the best access to your attractions with the least amount of driving time.   If you don’t want to switch accommodations in the middle of your trip, then staying on the East Side in the town of Kapa’a would be your best bet.

South Shore (Poipu & Koloa)

The sunniest part of the island with some of Kauai’s best beaches, plenty of resorts, and a wide variety of restaurants. With calm waters, golden beaches, and endless sunshine, the South Shore is where most visitors choose to stay. Poipu Beach is perfect for snorkeling and spotting sea turtles, while Shipwreck Beach is ideal for a morning walk or adventurous boogie boarding. You’ll find a mix of luxury resorts, condos, and vacation rentals, plus great shopping and dining nearby–many within walking distance. If you’re looking for a classic Hawaiian vacation vibe, this is where you’ll find it.

  • Vibe: Sunny, lively, and family-friendly

  • Best For: Families, honeymooners, beach lovers and anyone looking for a lively base with plenty of amenities.

North Shore (Princeville & Hanalei)

The North Shore is the lushest, most scenic part of Kauai with dramatic mountains, waterfalls, and stunning beaches straight out of a movie.  It is the postcard images you have seen of Kauai—green cliffs, golden sands, and a laid-back vibe. Hanalei Bay is a highlight, offering two miles of soft sand with a backdrop of mountains. This area is less developed than the South Shore, giving it a more secluded feel, though you’ll still find boutique hotels, vacation rentals, and charming local shops.

Vibe: Laid-back, tropical, adventurous.

Best For: Couples, nature lovers, and those who want a quieter escape surrounded by gorgeous scenery.

East Side (Kapa‘a & Wailua)

The East Side, often called the Coconut Coast, is the most central area of the island, making it a great base if you want to explore both North and South Shores without switching hotels.  It has more local neighborhoods than resort areas, with a mix of budget-friendly hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, shops and grocery stores.  Plus it is the closest to the Lihue airport.   While the beaches here aren’t always swimmable, they’re great for sunrise walks, and you’ll be close to waterfalls and hiking trails. It’s less polished than the resort areas, but it has a local, authentic feel.

Vibe: Convenient, budget-friendly, local.

Best For:  Budget travelers, and those who want easy access to all parts of Kauai without switching accommodations.

Southwest Side (Waimea & Kekaha)

The Southwest side of Kauai is the gateway to Waimea Canyon and Kokeʻe State Park, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” This is the driest part of the island, with fewer tourists and more of an old-Hawaii feel. While you won’t find big resorts here, it’s perfect for those who want a quieter stay with easy access to outdoor adventure.

A quiet, off-the-beaten-path area with dramatic landscapes and access to Waimea Canyon.  This area is best if you want to hike, explore, and avoid crowds.

Vibe: Remote, rustic, adventurous.

Best For: Hikers, explorers, and anyone seeking a less touristy experience.

Final Thoughts

Deciding where to stay in Kauai comes down to two things. First, your travel style—whether you want sunny beaches, lush mountains, or a convenient central base. Each region has something unique to offer, from the lively South Shore to the scenic North Shore, the central East Side, and the adventurous West Side.

Second, consider where you plan to spend your time on the island and how much driving you want to do. If you plan to explore all of Kauai’s top spots, it’s best to split your stay between the South Shore and the North Shore (or choose the East Side as a central base). In my Ultimate 8-Day Kauai Itinerary, I’ve laid out the perfect route that starts in the South and ends in the North, minimizing driving while hitting all the highlights.

No matter where you choose, you’ll be surrounded by Kauai’s stunning natural beauty.
