Best Places To See Wildlife In Glacier National Park

There is an abundance of wildlife in Glacier National Park.  The chances are  very good chance that you will see big horn sheep, mountain goats, marmots and even a bear or moose!

These are the best places to see wildlife in Glacier National Park.

 Logan Pass

Logan Pass is the best place to see wildlife in Glacier.  It is the highest elevation you can reach by car in Glacier National Park.

There are two popular hiking trailheads at Logan Pass:  Highline Trail and Hidden Lake.

Big horn sheep, mountain goats and marmots are very common at Logan Pass.  You will likely see them right off the road near the visitor center and on the trails themselves.   Grizzly bears also frequent the trails at Logan Pass but you aren’t as likely to see them as the sheep and mountain goats.

Logan Pass & the hiking trails located there, are the best places to view big horn sheep and mountain goats!

Many Glacier

The Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park offers excellent chances to see wildlife, especially moose!  Big horn sheep, mountain goats, moose and bears are all common in this part of Glacier.

We saw a bull moose right off the trail on the Grinnell Glacier hike, and then another moose wading in Lake Josephine on the same trail.  Moose are also known to frequent Swiftcurrent Lake in Many Glacier.

There was a  mother grizzly bear and her cubs just walking along Many Glacier Road as we drove past them in our car.

Many Glacier is definitely one of the best places to see wildlife!

Fishercap Lake

Fishercap Lake is in the Many Glacier part of Glacier National Park.

If you want to see a moose, Fishercap Lake gives you the highest chance.

It is only a quarter mile hike to get to the lake from the parking lot.  Moose are known to wade in the lake, especially in the late afternoon and evening.

When we went at 5:00 pm we saw a bull moose feeding in the water.  There was a  gathering of people on the beach just watching the moose.  Everyone was quiet as not to disturb the moose.  The only sounds you heard were the shutters of cameras, and the crunching of the sand as newcomers arrived.

St. Mary Lake

Elk, bears and moose are the animals that you may see in the St. Mary Lake area of Glacier.

If you are looking for elk, the area around the St. Mary Visitors Center is a good place to go.

Moose and bears are often spotted in and around the shores of St. Mary Lake.

St. Mary is a great place to view wildlife.

Upper Two Medicine Lake

Upper Two Medicine Lake is another area in Glational National Park where moose frequent.  There is also a chance that you will see big horn sheep, mountain goats and bears.

If you are planning to visit Glacier National Park, you will most likely see wildlife.  When you encounter wildlife, give them their space, step aside on the trail and let them pass.  Remember to always carry bear spray with you on all of the hikes in Glacier.  Check out my other Glacier National Park posts below.
