When you think of Santorini, you probably picture whitewashed buildings, blue-domed churches, and epic sunsets—but did you know this little volcanic island also makes incredible wine? On our trip, we decided to spend our final day in Santorini wine tasting, and it ended up being one of our favorite experiences.
We booked this small-group Santorini wine tour, and from the moment we were picked up in a comfy luxury van, I knew we were in for something special. With just eight people in our group, it felt more like a day out with friends than a tour. By the end of the night, we’d learned centuries-old wine-making secrets, sipped some seriously good Assyrtiko, and watched the sun set over the caldera with a glass in hand.
Getting Started
Our guide, Elena, picked us up in a luxury van from the Imerovigli bus stop, which was just a short walk from our hotel. We made two quick stops along the way to pick up the other members of our group, and we all introduced ourselves. Everyone was so friendly! As we drove, Elena gave us a quick rundown of the island’s wine history and hinted at a few surprises we’d discover along the way. Before we knew it, the winding roads and stunning views had led us to our very first vineyard.
Stop 1: Santorini’s Unique Grape-Growing Tradition
If you’ve visited other wine regions, you might expect to see long rows of vines climbing tall trellises. Not here. In Santorini, grapes are grown in basket-shaped vines called kouloura.
This method is genius. The island’s volcanic soil, intense sunlight, and strong winds make it hard for traditional vines to survive. By weaving the vines into low, circular baskets, farmers protect the grapes from the wind, shield them from the scorching sun, and even trap morning dew—giving them the little bit of moisture they need in Santorini’s dry climate. It’s an ancient technique passed down for generations, and it’s one of the reasons Santorini’s white wines—especially the crisp, citrusy Assyrtiko—are so distinctive.
Stop 2: Estate Argyros – A Taste of Assyrtiko
Next, we pulled up to Estate Argyros. The setting was gorgeous, and the tasting here felt both elegant and relaxed. We tried several wines, each paired with little bites of local cheese, olives, and fresh bread. My personal favorite? Their barrel-aged Assyrtiko. It had that bright, zesty flavor Santorini is known for, but with a little extra depth from the oak.
Stop 3: Hatzidakis Cave Winery – Wine Beneath the Earth
From there, we made our way to Hatzidakis Winery, which might just be one of the coolest wine cellars I’ve ever seen—literally. The wine is stored in caves carved right into the volcanic rock, naturally keeping them cool and humid year-round. Our guide walked us through the process, explaining how the conditions here shape the flavors. We got to taste some unique vintages you can’t easily find outside Greece, and they were unlike anything I’ve tried before—earthy, mineral-rich, and unforgettable.
Stop 4: Sunset at Santo Wines – The Grand Finale
Our last stop was Santo Wines, and I swear they saved the best for last. Perched high above the caldera, it offers one of the most spectacular sunset views on the island. We settled in with a flight of wines as the sun turned the sky from gold to pink to deep orange. Between the view, the wine, and the company, it was one of those “pinch me” moments I’ll remember forever.
Final Thoughts
If you love wine—or just want to see a different side of Santorini—this small-group wine tour is worth every sip. The small group size, knowledgeable guide, and stunning stops made it one of the highlights of our trip. I loved learning about Santorini’s unique grape-growing traditions, tasting wines I’d never find back home, and capping it all off with that unforgettable sunset at Santo Wines.
If you’re heading to Santorini and want to experience it for yourself, you can check availability and book the exact tour we did here. Just be sure to grab your spot early—especially if you want to be there for sunset. The sunset tours fill up fast.
