Santorini is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world—a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea known for its caldera: whitewashed buildings, dramatic cliffs, and unforgettable sunsets. But Santorini is so much more than the caldera! Whether you’re here for the romance, the adventure, the history, or the food, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a complete guide to the top things to do in Santorini, Greece, including hidden gems and must-do tours.

1. Hike from Fira to Oia
One of the best free activities in Santorini is the scenic hike from Fira to Oia. This 6.5-mile (10.5 km) trail winds along the caldera’s edge, past most of the famous blue dome churches and offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Start early to avoid the heat.
👉 For more tips on this hike, including what to bring, what to expect and more, don’t miss my full blog post with Everything You Need to Know About the Fira to Oia Hike.
2. Take a Catamaran Cruise to the Volcanic Hot Springs
A catamaran tour is a must for any Santorini itinerary. Sail around the caldera, swim in the volcanic hot springs, snorkel near Red Beach, and enjoy a traditional Greek meal on board. Many tours include a sunset cruise option—which we did-highly recommended for a magical evening!
Important Note: The catamaran cruises pass by the volcano, but they do not stop for you to walk out onto the volcano. They do stop for a swim in the volcanic hot springs, though. If you are interested in hiking the volcano, there is a separate tour for that which I have linked further in this list.

3. Visit Santorini’s Unique Beaches
Unlike other Greek islands, Santorini’s beaches are defined by volcanic sand and dramatic cliffs. The beaches are rocky, so be sure to bring water shoes! Don’t miss:
Perissa Beach – long stretch of black sand with beach clubs and tavernas.
Perivolos Beach – stylish and lively, with water sports and upscale lounges.
Kamari Beach – family-friendly with sunbeds, cafes, and a beautiful promenade.
4. Ride the Hop-On, Hop-Off Beach Water Taxi
The Santorini Water Taxi is a fun and easy way to visit multiple beaches in one day. It runs between Red Beach, White Beach, and Black Beach—stopping at each so you can swim, sunbathe, or grab a bite. A great alternative to driving or taking a tour bus.

5. Explore Santorini by ATV
Renting an ATV or quad bike is one of the best ways to explore Santorini’s beaches, traditional villages, and hidden corners at your own pace. It’s perfect for adventurous travelers who want the freedom to roam. Just be sure to wear a helmet and check that your travel insurance covers quad bikes.

6. Go on a Wine Tour
Santorini is famous for its crisp Assyrtiko wines, thanks to the island’s volcanic soil and unique growing techniques. Taking a guided wine tour is a must-do for wine lovers—you’ll visit local wineries, learn about the basket-trained vines, and sip wine with jaw-dropping caldera views.
The tour I joined included a stop Santo Wines, which has one of the best sunset views on the island. We also visited two smaller family-run wineries where we sampled local varieties and learned about traditional wine-making techniques. If you’re a wine lover—or just want a relaxing afternoon with a view—this is one of the best things to do in Santorini.

7. Try a Kayak Tour Along the Coast
For a more active adventure, sign up for a kayak tour. Paddle along the southern coast, past Red Beach and White Beach, with opportunities to snorkel and stop at secluded coves–and even explore sea caves! It’s a great way to see Santorini from a new perspective.

8. Hike the Volcano & Swim in the Hot Springs
Take a boat trip to Nea Kameni, the active volcanic islet in the middle of the caldera. Hike up to the crater for incredible views, then swim in the nearby hot springs, which are naturally warmed by volcanic activity. It’s a half-day adventure that’s perfect for travelers who want a bit of hiking, history, and a unique experience on the water.

9. Discover the Akrotiri Archaeological Site
Often called the “Pompeii of the Aegean,” Akrotiri is a Bronze Age settlement preserved under volcanic ash. Walk through ancient streets and see frescoes, pottery, and multi-story buildings that date back to 1600 BC.

10. Visit Ancient Thera
Located high on a ridge between Kamari and Perissa, Ancient Thera offers spectacular views and fascinating ruins from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Wear comfortable shoes—it’s a steep climb or drive to the top!
11. Climb Skaros Rock
For incredible views and a bit of a workout, hike to the top of Skaros Rock near Imerovigli. This rocky promontory once held a medieval fortress, and today it’s a lesser-known sunset spot with panoramic views of the caldera. Skaros Rock can be done as part of the hike from Fira to Oia, but it will add about an hour to your hike. We did Skaros on a separate day. Wear sneakers and athletic clothes–it’s a workout–and a lot of steps out and back!
12. Wander the Villages of Megalochori & Pyrgos
Take a break from the crowds and explore the traditional villages of:
Megalochori – a charming maze of whitewashed houses, bell towers, and quiet courtyards.
Pyrgos – the highest village on the island with 360-degree views, art galleries, and cozy cafes.
13. Experience the Lost Atlantis Museum
The interactive Lost Atlantis Experience museum in Megalochori blends mythology, history, and immersive technology to explore the legend of Atlantis and its possible connection to Santorini. With 9D cinema, holograms, and virtual reality exhibits, it’s a fun and educational stop for both adults and kids. It’s an especially great activity on a hot afternoon or when you need a break from the sun.
