One of the hands down best things to do in Santorini is the scenic hike from Fira to Oia. If you love stunning views, charming villages and feeling like you are walking through a postcard, this hike is for you. Here is everything you need to know about Santorini’s hike from Fira to Oia.
What Is The Fira to Oia Hike?
This hike is a 6-7 mile (10-11 km) coastal trail that connects Fira, the capital of Santorini, to the beautiful village of Oia. It winds along the caldera, offering the most breathtaking views of the island.
It’s not a technical hike, but it does involve hills, uneven terrain, and sun exposure. Most people can do it with a basic level of fitness (and plenty of water).
The hike takes about 4 hours to complete if you stop along the way for photos (which you definitely will.) The hike can be done in either direction, but Oia to Fira is slightly more uphill than Fira to Oia.
It is recommended to start the hike early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid hiking during the hottest part of the day.
Tip: Stay in Imerovigli
Tale of 2 Hikes
Part 1: Fira to Imerovigli – The Scenic Stroll
Part 1 Highlights & Tips
- The starting point for the hike is the Atlantis Hotel in Fira.
- As you are walking towards Imerovigli, stop and look back to your left towards Fira regularly for amazing views.
- The Blue Note Restaurant in Imerovigli is the last place to get food or drinks along the trail before you reach Oia. The restaurant does not open until 11 am, so if you are starting earlier in the morning, it will not be an option for you.
- Important tip: At the Blue Note restaurant, do not continue going straight! If you go straight, you will miss the best views of the caldera. Instead, go down the stairs to the left of the Blue Note to continue the path along the cliffside.
- At Mama Thira restaurant, take a quick photo detour. Go up the stairs outside of Mama Thira and stay right for pretty blue dome views.
- You will pass by Skaros Rock. You can actually hike out to Skaros Rock, but it will add about an hour to your hike. I suggest doing Skaros Rock on a different day.
Part 2: Imerovigli to Oia — The Real Hike Begins
Part 2 Highlights & Tips:
- About 2 miles past Imerovigli, you come across the Chapel of Prophet Elias, which is the highest point of the hike.
- Just past the Chapel is the only stretch of the hike that is in the shade. This is also the windiest part of the hike. Hold on to your hat through this portion!
- About a mile and a half from Oia, you will come across an arch perched up on the cliff with a Greek flag flying above it. From the arch, you can see the Village of Oia below.
How to Get Back
What To Wear & Bring
- Wear Sneakers. Don’t attempt to do this hike in flip flops or any other type of sandal.
- Wear comfortable athletic clothes. I wore a tennis dress with built in bike shorts.
- Wear and bring sunscreen
- Bring plenty of water. There is nowhere to stop and get water along the way once you leave Imerovigli. I had a 40 oz water bottle with me.
- Wear a hat, but remember there are stretches of the hike that are windy. A hat with a strap is great.
- Cooling Towels We got them wet before we left our hotel, put them in the sealable bags they come in and ended up putting them on towards the end of the hike when it got really hot out.
- Snacks or fruit
